Italy At The Oscars

Italian flavor at the Oscar 2023 awards ceremony.

Among the nominations for the 2023 Oscars, there are two Italians in the running for victory: Alice Rohrwacher and Aldo Signoretti, and two other productions nominated in which we are tangentially related.

Alice Rohrwacher is the director, screenwriter, and producer of Le Pupille, a 37-minute short film (nominated for Best Live Action Short Film) that recounts a special day in the life of a group of girl students (pupille) at a religious boarding school during World War II. Le Pupille is the Christmas short that Alice dedicates to all the women in her life: her mother, her sister Alba, her friend Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and the beloved Elsa Morante (the short is inspired by her Season’s Greetings letter to Goffredo Fofi).

“The splendid letter describes what happens to a trifle that arrives at a religious boarding school during the holidays,” explains Rohrwacher in her director’s notes. The short was born from imagining the intertwined destinies in that boarding school, with Christmas approaching in the thoughts and gestures of little orphan girls left alone with four nuns in a time of famine and war. A film about desire, freedom, and devotion, about the anarchy that lives in the minds of those at a rigid boarding school, “Obedient girls are not allowed to move, but the pupils / their pupils can dance with wild abandon in a dance of freedom.”

The second nominee is Aldo Signoretti, considered the master of cinematic hair styles, with which he earned the possibility to win an Oscar with the film Elvis by Baz Luhrmann, a director he already worked with and received his first Oscar nomination thanks to Moulin Rouge. This is his fourth Oscar nomination, after Moulin Rouge, Apocalypto, and Il Divo from Paolo Sorrentino.

There are at least two other representatives of Italy at this year’s Oscars, even if they are not the main nominees. One is EO, an Italian-Polish co-production nominated for Best International Feature that even has some Italian dialogue. One of the protagonists is the young actor Lorenzo Zurzolo

The other representation of our inclusion in the 2023 Oscars is Tell It Like a Woman. Chiara Tilesi, Andrea Iervolino, and Monika Bacardi are among the producers of the film, which is divided into episodes, one of which was shot by Maria Sole Tognazzi with actress Margherita Buy. The song “Applause” from the soundtrack is nominated for Best Original Song, written by Diane Warren (her 14th nomination) and interpreted by Sofia Carson.

The 95th Oscars’ ceremony will take place on March, 12th 2023, at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. Emmy Award-winning late-night talk show host and producer Jimmy Kimmel will host the event.
