Telluride Film Festival 2026 (September 4–7, 2026, Telluride, Colorado)
Festivals such as Sundance, Toronto and New York publish their line-ups weeks ahead of the opening, complete with trailers and premiere dates. Telluride does not. Since 1977, the festival has withheld its program until the afternoon it begins — a policy with no equivalent among major events on the international circuit.
Telluride is also careful never to describe its selections as premieres. The festival defines itself instead as a “sneak-preview” event, presenting films without the months of promotional lead-up that typically precede a title’s public unveiling.
There is no competitive section, no jury, and no prize awarded to a film. The festival’s signature recognition, the Silver Medallion, goes to individuals rather than titles — three are presented across the four days of programming, one each night. A fourth honor, the Special Medallion, is awarded to a “hero of cinema” and has occasionally gone to organizations rather than individuals, such as The Film Foundation (2023) and Les Films du Losange (2024). Scale is kept accordingly contained: between fifty and sixty program screened across eleven venues, with total attendance capped at under 8,000. The same restraint applies to accreditation: Telluride issues no complimentary credentials, journalists included, a practice that sets it apart from most other major festivals.
One structural exception to this confidentiality is the Guest Director program, introduced in 1988. Each year a figure from outside festival programming — writers, musicians and public intellectuals among past selections, including Salman Rushdie, Stephen Sondheim and Slavoj Žižek — is announced in advance and chooses a small number of classic films to fold into the line-up. British-American actress, writer and director Rebecca Hall has been named Guest Director for the 2026 edition.
Despite its resistance to advance publicity, Telluride has built a consistent track record with major awards bodies: in recent years, a substantial share of eventual Best Picture nominees and winners — Birdman, Moonlight and Belfast among them — screened at Telluride before appearing in Toronto or New York.
