78th Emmy Awards — September 5–6 & 14, 2026, Los Angeles
The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on September 14 in Los Angeles, celebrating a television season in which established hits and new series are competing at the top of the awards race. The main ceremony will air on NBC, while the Creative Arts Emmy Awards — honoring many of the industry’s technical and creative professions — will be presented over two nights, September 5 and 6.
Leading the field is HBO Max’s medical drama The Pitt, with 25 nominations, followed closely by Hacks, whose 24 nods set a new single-season record for a comedy series as the show enters its final Emmy run. But some of the strongest results come from newcomers. Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay earned 19 nominations, the most for any new program this year, and also helped Matthew Rhys achieve an unusual distinction: he is the only actor this cycle nominated in two separate lead acting categories, for Widow’s Bay and Netflix’s The Beast in Me. The mix of returning awards favorites and immediately competitive new titles offers a telling snapshot of a U.S. television market where streamers and premium networks continue to compete for both audiences and industry recognition.
Within that landscape, Italy also finds a place in this year’s Emmy conversation. National Geographic’s Tucci in Italy received three nominations: Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special, with Stanley Tucci nominated as executive producer and host; Outstanding Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program for the episode “Le Marche”; and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Nonfiction Program for “Naples & Campania.”
Produced by BBC Studios Specialist Factual Productions and Salt Productions for National Geographic, the series explores Italy through food, landscapes and local communities, demonstrating how territories, culinary traditions and regional identities can become the narrative foundation of a premium factual format designed for an international audience. Its lush cinematography makes Italy’s landscapes and regional settings an integral part of the storytelling, particularly in the episode dedicated to Le Marche. Tucci’s relationship with the Emmys through his exploration of Italy is already well established: in 2023, CNN’s Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy won Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special.
Italy’s presence at the 2026 Emmys also extends behind the camera. At the Creative Arts Awards, Italian hair designer Francesco Pegoretti and hairstylist Marica Falso are both nominated as members of the team behind Netflix’s Wednesday, competing for Outstanding Contemporary Hairstyling for the episode “Woe Me The Money.” For both professionals, it is their second consecutive Emmy nomination: in 2025, they were nominated together for AMC’s Anne Rice’s Interview With the Vampire.
