Whoopi Goldberg Joins Cast of Italian Soap Opera “A Place in the Sun” (“Un posto al sole”)

Oscar-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg has officially announced that she has reached an agreement to join the cast of the historic Italian soap opera “A Place in the Sun” (“Un posto al sole”), produced by Fremantle and broadcast on Rai 3 since 1996.

The announcement came through a video posted Friday on social media, filmed during the actress’s stay in Italy, where she is taking a temporary break from her role on the talk show “The View.” In the video, Goldberg appears on a sunny Italian coastline and shares her enthusiasm for this new professional project.

“I just wanted to stop in and say how happy I am to be joining the cast of ‘Un Posto Al Sole,'” said the actress, referring to the regional production that debuted in 1996 and is broadcast in Italian on the Rai 3 network. The show, filmed in Naples, originally aired at 6:30 PM before moving to its current 8:50 PM time slot. “They know it’s a crazy idea. I know it’s a crazy idea. But, what a wonderful thing to do. I’m looking forward to it. I’m excited.”

Goldberg candidly admitted the linguistic challenges that await her: “No, my Italian is not perfect, but we’ve worked it out” to allow her to appear on the program. The video concludes with a warm “Ciao! See you on TV!”

This does not represent Goldberg’s first connection with Italy. The actress is a frequent visitor to Italian locations and has met Pope Francis several times at the Vatican. Her connection with Italian television was already evident a year ago during an episode of “The View,” when she showed a segment from the program “Viva Radio2” in which Fiorello and Mahmood had dedicated a song from “Sister Act” to her for her birthday.

Naples has proven to be a fertile setting for successful Italian productions, with the city also serving as the backdrop for “Mare Fuori,” another Rai success that has gained international recognition and is available on Netflix in the United States with the title “The Sea Beyond.

Goldberg’s participation in “A Place in the Sun” represents a significant example of Italian-American cultural collaboration in the audiovisual sector, highlighting the international appeal of Italian television productions and the growing interest of Hollywood talent in European projects.
