Cannes Film Festival, May 12–23 — Marché du Film, May 12–20, Cannes, France
The 79th Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 12 to 23 at the Palais des Festivals, with South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook presiding over the main competition jury. His appointment signals a rigorously auteur-driven edition: this year’s competition is dominated by international art cinema, with a markedly reduced Hollywood footprint. Veteran directors returning to the Croisette include Pedro Almodóvar (Bitter Christmas), Asghar Farhadi (Parallel Tales), Hirokazu Kore-eda (Sheep in the Box), and Ryusuke Hamaguchi (All of a Sudden). Palme d’Or winner Cristian Mungiu returns with Fjord, his first English-language feature. The festival opens on May 12 with Pierre Salvadori’s The Electric Kiss, a French period comedy-drama set in the early twentieth-century Parisian art world.
Two honorary Palmes d’Or will mark the edition: one to Barbra Streisand, whose six-decade career across acting, directing and producing has made her one of the defining figures of American entertainment; and one to Peter Jackson, whose Lord of the Rings trilogy redefined epic franchise filmmaking. Together, the two tributes reflect a Cannes willing to broaden its canon in 2026.
Running alongside the festival from May 12 to 20, the Marché du Film — the world’s largest film market — designates Japan as Country of Honour and introduces new programming focused on the creator economy, artificial intelligence, and immersive formats. Italy’s institutional presence at the market is coordinated through the Italian Pavilion, organised by the Italian Trade Agency (ITA – ICE Agenzia) and Cinecittà in collaboration with the Directorate General for Cinema and Audiovisual (DGCA-MiC). The Pavilion operates across two venues: the Salon Marta at the Hotel Barrière Le Majestic, serving as the institutional hub for bilateral meetings, press activities, and sector presentations; and a dedicated stand within the Palais des Festivals for Italian international sales companies. Programme details are available at italianpavilion.it.
