Immaginaria Film Festival 2025 | April 11-13 | Cinema Nuovo Sacher, ROME
The 20th edition of Immaginaria – International Film Festival of Lesbians & Other Rebellious Women will take place from April 11 to 13, 2025, at the Cinema Nuovo Sacher in Rome. A landmark event in independent women’s cinema, the festival is dedicated to films by and about women, with a strong focus on lesbian and feminist storytelling. For two decades, Immaginaria has celebrated the talent of female directors, screenwriters, and artists, providing a platform for films that challenge mainstream narratives and offer fresh perspectives on gender, identity, and social justice.
This year’s edition holds special significance as it is dedicated to Marina Genovese, a pivotal figure in Italian feminism and the lesbian movement. A tireless activist and one of the festival’s founding members, Genovese dedicated her life to advancing the rights, visibility, and independence of lesbian women. Her passion and commitment made Immaginaria a vital cultural space where stories often overlooked by traditional film circuits find a home.
The festival will open on Friday, April 11, at 8:00 PM, with a special screening of Desert Hearts, the iconic film by director Donna Deitch, who will be the festival’s guest of honor. Recognized as a milestone in LGBTQ+ independent cinema, Desert Hearts revolutionized the representation of lesbian relationships on screen and remains a touchstone for queer storytelling. Following the screening, Deitch will engage in an open dialogue with the audience, sharing her artistic vision and discussing the cultural impact of her film. This highly anticipated opening night sets the stage for a festival that reaffirms the power of cinema as a tool for storytelling and social change.
Beyond screenings, Immaginaria 2025 will feature panel discussions, Q&As with filmmakers, and industry roundtables, creating a dynamic forum for exchange and reflection on women’s roles in cinema and society. As an internationally recognized event, the festival draws filmmakers, activists, and cinephiles from around the world, fostering a space where creativity and activism intersect.
Founded in Bologna in 1993 by the Visibilia APS Cultural Association, Immaginaria benefits from the support of institutions such as the University of Tuscia – GEP (Gender Equality Plan), the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia – CSC, the Griffith Academy of Cinema and Television, UNAR (National Office Against Racial Discrimination), TRUST – Nel Nome della Donna, and various cultural and LGBTQ+ organizations.
With its unwavering commitment to independent women’s cinema, Immaginaria continues to be a vital showcase for bold, thought-provoking storytelling, making its 20th edition an unmissable event for filmmakers and audiences alike.
