Emmy Awards 2023

After months of anticipation, the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards finally took place live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles Monday 15th September.

Traditionally held in September, they were postponed due to the SAG-AFTRA and The Writers Guild of America strikes. The Emmy’s 75th anniversary show closes out two weeks of award shows including the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards.

This year’s Emmys featured a string of familiar winners including Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri for The Bear, Steven Yeun and Ali Wong for Beef (marking the first woman of Asian descent to win a lead acting award), and Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook for Succession, all actors who had already dominated this year’s Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards.

Their respective series also swept through the main categories, with Succession and The Bear winning 6 out of 7 awards in their respective field of drama and comedy, and Beef scoring 5 out of 7 in the Limited Series category.

The night was not all predictable, however. Due to being moved from the Talk Series category to the new Scripted-Variety category, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver’s 7 year win streak in the former ended, and its first win in the latter was achieved, ending Saturday Night Live’s 6 year win streak. The Daily Show With Trevor Noah took up the mantle in the Talk Series category, edging out the projected winner, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

Another show that was moved unfortunately did not fare as well. Mike White’s The White Lotus won 5 awards in last year’s limited series categories, but did not succeed in its swap to this year’s competitive drama series categories, which included Succession and The Last of Us. Its only Emmy award win this year was for Jennifer Coolidge as Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. In this category there were Italian actresses: Simona Tabasco and Sabrina Impacciatore.

The presence of Tabasco and Impacciatore at the Emmy Awards notably highlighted the increasing international diversity and reach of the event. Both actresses have brought attention to the growing influence of Italian talent in international television.

GLAAD won the 2023 Governors Award for its work in advocating and securing fair, accurate, and diverse representation of the LGBTQ+ community in the media and entertainment industries.
