Venice Film Festival Lineup
Many top movies, no stars.
Venice, August 30 – September 9
The Hollywood strikes are looming in Venice. Still, Venice Film Festival artistic director Alberto Barbera managed to attract many top movies to the Lido. The lineup presentation, Tuesday morning (July 25), disclosed films by directors Bradley Cooper, Yorgos Lanthimos, David Fincher, Michael Mann, Sofia Coppola, Ava DuVernay, and Wes Anderson that will all premiere at the event, which runs from Aug. 30th – Sept. 9th.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the actors’ strike, Barbera said that only one title had been pulled from the expected lineup. The tennis drama Challengers, directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Zendaya, won’t open the Italian festival as planned. Barbera said he hoped stars of smaller independent movies would still publicize their work in person.
“We hope the red carpet will not be as empty as some people had predicted,” he said. Biopics are taking the lead this year: Netflix enters the drama Maestro, about the composer Leonard Bernstein, directed by and starring Bradley Cooper, who brought his directorial debut A Star is Born to Venice in 2018. Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, based on the memoirs of Elvis Presley’s wife and starring Cailee Spaeny, was produced by A24. Neon brings Ferrari, directed by Michael Mann, starring Adam Driver as the famed Italian carmaker Enzo Ferrari, and Penelope Cruz as his wife. Ava DuVernay is making history as the first African American woman to compete for the Golden Lion with her movie Origin, which dissects racism in the United States. Among the other big pictures are Lanthimos’ surrealist science fiction comedy-drama Poor Things, starring Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo, and Luc Besson’s Dogman. Both of these movies are gunning for the top award.
Woody Allen’s Coup De Chance, Roman Polanski’s The Palace and Wes Anderson’s Netflix comedy The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, based on a Roald Dahl short story and featuring Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, and Ben Kingsley – will all shown out of competition.
