Pordenone Silent Film Festival (October 4–11, 2025), Pordenone, Italy
Since its founding in 1982, the Pordenone Silent Film Festival – Le Giornate del Cinema Muto has become the most important international event dedicated to the preservation, study, and celebration of early cinema. Archivists, scholars, musicians, and film professionals from around the globe—including regular delegations from the United States such as the Library of Congress, the UCLA Film & Television Archive, the George Eastman Museum, the MoMA Department of Film, and the USC School of Cinematic Arts—will gather in October in Pordenone to share restorations, retrospectives, and research.
Over the years, the award has also celebrated leading American professionals and institutions, including film preservationist David Shepard, the Academy Film Archive, and scholars from major universities such as Harvard and Yale, whose work has been crucial in safeguarding the silent-film heritage of the United States. This recognition reflects the deep and ongoing dialogue between Pordenone and the American archival and academic community.
Each edition of the festival also showcases works sourced from major U.S. film archives—including the Library of Congress and UCLA—screened at Teatro Verdi with live musical accompaniment, reinforcing Pordenone’s role as a bridge between European and American traditions of silent cinema.
