New York Film Festival 2025 (September 26-October 13), Lincoln Center
Opening the festival on September 26 is Luca Guadagnino’s highly anticipated After the Hunt, premiering shortly after its special out-of-competition debut in Venice. Written by Nora Garrett from an original screenplay, the psychological drama stars Julia Roberts as a respected professor whose life unravels after her star pupil accuses a colleague of assault, forcing her to confront questions of loyalty, integrity, and self-preservation. Speaking ahead of the festival, Guadagnino remarked:
“I have always found the New York Film Festival to be an arbiter of global cinema… To be invited to open the 63rd edition is a tremendous responsibility and honor. … I am elated and thrilled to bring to New York our tale of morality and power.”
The centerpiece selection is Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother, while the festival closes with Bradley Cooper’s Is This Thing On?, marking three high-profile U.S. premieres that bookend the event.
Italian cinema enjoys a strong presence at NYFF63. In addition to After the Hunt, Gianfranco Rosi presents Sotto le nuvole (Below the Clouds), an intimate portrait of life in a volatile area of Naples under Mount Vesuvius and the Campi Flegrei volcanic caldera. Francesco Sossai’s The Last One for the Road (Le Città di Pianura) offers a wistful, free-spirited road movie set in the Venetian plains.
The Currents lineup, dedicated to bold and inventive works by emerging and established artists, includes the U.S. premiere of Ben Rivers’ Mare’s Nest, described as “an enigmatic road movie set in a post-apocalyptic world ruled by children.” Other highlights include Radu Jude’s Dracula and Kamal Aljafari’s With Hasan in Gaza.
Reflecting on this year’s program, Artistic Director Dennis Lim stated:
“In a film landscape that is so often homogeneous by design, this year’s Currents lineup is energizing for being a showcase of the boundless possibilities of cinematic language… reminding us of all that cinema can do.”
With its blend of internationally acclaimed auteurs, emerging voices, and daring experimentation, NYFF63 once again confirms its role as a global stage for cinematic excellence.
