Emmy Awards 2025: The 77th Edition Live on September 14 – Nominations, Trends, and How to Watch the Ceremony

CBS will broadcast the 2025 Emmy Awards, as part of the rotating system among the United States’ four major broadcast networks. In a television landscape where streaming platforms now command most of the nominations, media attention, and audience engagement, the Emmys’ return to a traditional network stage carries considerable symbolic weight. On one hand, it serves as a tribute to the history of American television; on the other, it underscores the industry’s acknowledgment of digital platforms’ increasing dominance—even at the most prestigious awards ceremonies.

While dramas are on the rise, comedies and limited series have dropped sharply—a sign of reduced output due to budget cuts and corporate consolidation. The trends at the Emmys therefore reflect the economic and structural changes that are reshaping the American television industry.

“Severance” leads the Drama Series field with 27 nominations—twice as many as its first season, which won only two technical awards in 2022. The series is followed by “The Pitt,” which received 13 nominations, including one for Noah Wyle. Notably, Wyle, after several Emmy losses for “ER,” is now regarded as a strong contender for a win.

In the Comedy category, Apple TV+’s “The Studio” stands out with 23 nominations. The more than 26,000 members of the Television Academy appear to favor series that explore the entertainment industry itself—evident with previous nominee “Hacks” and now “The Studio.” Nearly half the nominations for “The Studio” are for the cast, with an exceptional result for guest stars: six total nominations, five of which went to actors playing themselves, including Dave Franco, Ron Howard, Anthony Mackie, and Martin Scorsese. Zoë Kravitz received a nomination in the Guest Actress category, while Bryan Cranston was recognized for a role in which, unusually, he does not play himself. This likely sets a record for the number of acting nominations awarded to individuals portraying versions of themselves on screen.

Among the first-time acting nominees are Ron Howard—who, despite a career spanning back to the 1960s and numerous producer accolades, is receiving his first Emmy nomination as a performer thanks to his comedic self-portrayal as a director—and Harrison Ford, who earned his first-ever Emmy nod for his acclaimed role in the second season of “Shrinking” (Apple TV+), a series debuting in the main Comedy categories with seven total nominations.

Apple TV+ is a leading force in both drama and comedy categories with titles like “The Studio,” “Shrinking,” and “Severance.” Meanwhile, Netflix dominates the Limited Series/Anthology category with “Adolescence,” “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” and “Black Mirror.” Notably, Apple TV+ is absent from this particular race.

As Deadline notes, the Emmys appear to be entering a more innovative and less predictable era marked by greater openness to new faces and titles within the top categories.
