Riviera International Film Festival – May 5-10, 2026, Sestri Levante, Italy

Now in its tenth edition, the Riviera International Film Festival (RIFF) has established itself as one of Italy’s most distinctive platforms for independent cinema, bringing together emerging directors, international producers, and industry professionals in the coastal town of Sestri Levante, on the Ligurian Riviera.

The festival’s competition focuses on directors under 35, presenting feature films, international documentaries, and short films engaging with urgent contemporary themes — from climate change to civil rights and new generational narratives. The program is deliberately independent in spirit, favoring films with the potential to generate conversation at subsequent festivals on the international circuit. Past jury presidents have included actor Rufus Sewell, while recent guests have ranged from director Matteo Garrone to actors Matt Dillon and Valeria Golino.

Beyond screenings, RIFF offers a solid industry program of masterclasses and panels connecting filmmakers with producers, distributors, and other professionals. Central to this is the RIFF Pitch Lab, a development workshop for documentary projects that has become a recognized talent incubator — with alumni work going on to premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The 2026 edition of RIFF Pitch Lab offers a €5,000 development prize for each category (Open Stories and Green & Blue), with project development supported by industry professionals including executives from independent distributor I Wonder Pictures.

Sestri Levante is very much a co-protagonist of the event. Screenings take place between the historic center and the coastline, while meetings and talks are hosted in palazzi and hotels overlooking the bay. For international professionals, the setting offers an entry point into a less predictable Italy — far from mainstream circuits, yet fully engaged with the broader conversations shaping the future of audiovisual content.
