Netflix Bets on Italy: The Leopard Is Ready to Roar
The wait is over: on Tuesday, November 19, the first official teaser trailer for The Leopard – Il Gattopardo was released. This six-episode Netflix series—entirely filmed in Italy and produced locally by Indiana Production and Moonage Pictures—will debut on the platform in 2025. Arriving over 60 years after Luchino Visconti’s cinematic masterpiece, the series brings Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s iconic 1958 novel back to life, portraying an epic, sensual tale set against the backdrop of Sicily during the unification of Italy in 1860.
This fresh adaptation is poised to become a flagship title in Netflix’s non-English catalog, featuring actors Kim Rossi Stuart as Don Fabrizio and Saul Nanni (who previously starred together in Brado, directed by Rossi Stuart in 2022) as Tancredi, alongside Deva Cassel (daughter of Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel) as Angelica, and Benedetta Porcaroli in the role of Concetta. The series is helmed by a trio of directors: Tom Shankland (episodes 1-3 and 6), Giuseppe Capotondi (episode 4), and Laura Luchetti (episode 5).
The teaser captures it all: flowing gowns, grand balls, noble salons, Palermo’s streets, and Bagheria’s villas. Famous lines such as “If we want things to stay as they are, things will have to change” accompany intense close-ups of the veteran Stuart, Nanni (played by Alain Delon in the 1963 film), Cassel (inspired by Claudia Cardinale’s portrayal), and Porcaroli, who is building a strong career in Italy and internationally.
Unveiled at Netflix’s theater in Hollywood, the trailer was introduced by Tinny Andreatta, Netflix’s VP of Content for Italy. She shared in a video: “I’ve worked in Italian television for nearly 30 years. When I joined Netflix, Il Gattopardo was the first project I wanted to produce because of its ambition and scale.” The six episodes, penned by Richard Warlow and Benji Walters, promise to delve deeper into the novel’s characters while staying faithful to its essence. “Visconti transformed Tomasi di Lampedusa’s classic into a cinematic masterpiece, but there was always more to the story. It captures a pivotal moment in Italian history while portraying a man struggling with the end of his era and an uncertain future. In that sense, it feels both modern and universal,” Andreatta added.
“Great stories can come from anywhere,” said Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, as she highlighted other non-English titles joining the platform. Over 70% of Netflix’s global viewership happens with subtitles or dubbing, available in 33 and 36 languages respectively, she explained, adding that this global reach benefits both creators and audiences.
Among the upcoming non-English releases is another literary classic adaptation: Colombia’s One Hundred Years of Solitude. “It’s the first adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s novel, made with the blessing of his family on the condition that it be filmed in Colombia and in Spanish,” shared Paco Ramos, VP of Content for Latin America. The series debuts worldwide in December, alongside Senna, a major Brazilian production premiering on November 29.
Netflix also revealed numerous titles from Asia, including Squid Game Season 2, which will be released on December 26. Minyoung Kim, VP for Asia-Pacific, noted that “More than 80% of our subscribers watch K-content.”
