Modì: Second Depp’s movie with Scamarcio Excite San Sebastián
Johnny Depp triumphs at the San Sebastián Festival. The former star of Pirates of the Caribbean presented his film Modì – Three Days on the Wing of Madness during Spain’s most prestigious festival, a biopic dedicated to the Livorno artist Amedeo Modigliani and his second project behind the camera after The Brave in 1997. The film will soon land in Italy as part of the program for the Festa del Cinema di Roma, where the star will also receive a career award.
Set against the backdrop of Paris during World War II (though primarily filmed in Bucharest and Turin), the feature film stars Italian actor Riccardo Scamarcio as the painter and sculptor striving for recognition. He grapples with professional freedom, pride, and class snobbery while seeking genuine acknowledgment. A life journey that closely resembles the last years of Tim Burton’s muse in Sweeney Todd or Edward Scissorhands. Depp himself likened his bumpy life to Modigliani’s at the press conference, referencing the legal frenzy and defamation trial following his split from actress Amber Heard: “I’m sure we can say that I’ve been through a number of things here and there. Maybe yours didn’t turn into a soap opera,” he said. “I mean, literally, televised.”
“He is the kindest and sweetest man I’ve ever worked with in my life,” Scamarcio told the Hollywood Reporter. “He has heart and trust, which for me are the most important things. He’s truly amazing; Hollywood needs him, a talent of that caliber. He is essential for cinema in general. At the end of this process, can you imagine how much suffering is behind it? The industry should be very careful because artists can be very, very fragile. We need humanity, so let’s celebrate Johnny.”
Modì also stars Al Pacino as art collector Maurice Gangnat, Luisa Ranieri as Rosalie, a model of the era who posed for Modigliani, and Antonia Desplat as his partner of two years, Beatrice Hastings. Depp’s movie releases in theaters in Italy on Dec. 5, though a release date in the U.S. is yet to be confirmed. It is also produced by Italian Andrea Iervolino, who, after this project, left the historic company Ilbe, co-founded with Monica Bacardi, where he was president and CEO, and launched his own film and television production company: The Andrea Iervolino Company (TAIC), with headquarters in Rome and Los Angeles.
