Disney’s Future: Sequels, Baby Yoda, and Big Screen Magic Unveiled at D23!

At the D23 Expo – The Ultimate Disney Fan Event – Disney laid out its plans for box office success, with a strong focus on animated sequels and the ever-popular Baby Yoda. The 3 days celebration, held at the Honda Center and at the Convention Center in Anaheim, featured a dazzling array of presentations from Disney Animation, Pixar, Lucasfilm, and Marvel Studios.

Fans were treated to trailers, first-look footage, live performances, and even some interactive magic.

Disney CEO Bob Iger, making his first appearance at D23 in five years, was welcomed with enthusiastic applause. “I was going to say good evening and thank you for that warm welcome, but that was more than a warm welcome” Iger said stepping on stage and acknowledging the excitement in the room. The showcase was packed with news of sequels and spin-offs, signaling Disney’s confidence in its established franchises.

Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson opened the event with a performance of We’re Back a new song from Moana 2 which will reunite the beloved character with Maui for another adventure. Disney Animation followed with announcements of Zootopia 2 and the continuation of the Frozen saga with Frozen III and IV. Pixar also joined in on the sequel frenzy, unveiling Incredibles 3, Toy Story 5 and a new Inside Out spinoff series titled Dream Production set to premiere on Disney+.

On the live-action front, Disney revealed plans for Avatar: Fire and Ash and Tron: Ares, both third installments in their respective franchises. Additionally, the long-awaited sequel Freakier Friday was announced, along with live-action adaptations of classics like Snow White and Lilo & Stitch. With the success of recent releases like Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine, Disney seems confident in its strategy of relying on sequels, though not all past reboots have been equally successful.

Lucasfilm’s Star Wars segment was highlighted by the much-anticipated The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will mark Baby Yoda’s big-screen debut. The first-look footage showcased familiar characters like Zeb from Star Wars Rebels and iconic elements such as snow troopers and AT-AT walkers. While this was the only Star Wars film to be prominently featured, other projects, including one starring Daisy Ridley, are reportedly in development.

Marvel’s presence at D23 focused on upcoming TV series, including Ironheart, set to debut in 2025, and Agatha: All Along, which featured a live performance by Kathryn Hahn and her castmates. Pixar also introduced original content, including Elio, about a child’s intergalactic adventure, and Hoppers, a story centered on a robotic beaver.

Though D23 spotlighted well-known franchises, Disney also hinted at new ideas, suggesting a balance between nostalgia and fresh storytelling in the years ahead.
