Gary Oldman Joins Paolo Sorrentino’s Next Feature
Sorrentino’s next movie takes the audience back to his roots in Naples, weaving a tale about a woman named Partenope. Despite her name’s mythical association, in this narrative, she is neither siren nor legend. Set against the backdrop of the 1950s, Partenope is a testament to the myriad facets of human life – from the ephemeral joys of youth to its inevitable decline, from the timeless allure of classical beauty to its eventual transformations, and from fleeting romances to consuming passions. She journeys through short-lived infatuations, exhilarating love, moments of happiness and enduring pain, a tapestry of familial bonds, both real and fabricated, and the cycle of life’s endings and fresh starts.
The filmmaker remarks, “Interwoven with these life episodes are various other personas. Men and women observed, cherished, battling their own moments of sadness and disillusionment, their impatience and hopelessness, and the harrowing realization that they might never laugh again, especially at the simpler pleasures like witnessing a sophisticated man stumble on a city pavement.” He adds that time, the ever-faithful companion, and the city of Naples, with its allure and raw emotions, play significant roles in the narrative.
The cast is further enriched with talents like Nello Mascia and Biagio Izzo. Also, previously unveiled cast members include Celeste Dalla Porta, Silvia Degrandi, Isabella Ferrari, Lorenzo Gleijeses, Peppe Lanzetta, Silvio Orlando, Luisa Ranieri, Stefania Sandrelli, and Alfonso Santagata.
Sales will be handled by UTA and Fremantle.
