‘Barbie’ Success Means More Movie And TV Projects

Mattel and Warner Bros. renewed their licensing deal for dolls and games.

Barbie’s movie success made it clear: Mattel and Warner Bros. Discovery will stay in business together for years. Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz says more Barbie Film & TV projects will come: “It’s probably a bit early to talk about sequels, but obviously, with the success of the film…that would invite more opportunities,” Kreiz said on a conference call after the toymaker’s quarterly earnings. “We operate in an industry where everyone is looking for these moments, for these brands, for these cultural events. And they happen, but they don’t happen that often. [So] we expect the brand to continue to grow, we expect to have more opportunities in content — and this is not just film, this is television and other areas.”

Asked about the impact of Hollywood labor action on its entertainment plans, the chief executive said the strikes are “delaying some projects that are in development.” But, he added, “We’d made significant progress before the strike and expect to continue to make progress after it. We are watching the space and will manage according.”

The toy giant has also renewed its licensing deal with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products making it the official licensee for toys, dolls, vehicles, and games for over 50 of WBD’s brands and franchises. Mattel has been a licensing partner to Warner Bros. for some 20 years. “Mattel is incredibly proud of our two-decade-long partnership with Warner Bros. to create products for fans featuring their favorite Warner Bros. characters and storylines,” said Nick Karamanos, senior VP of entertainment partnerships at Mattel.
