Netflix Posts AI Job Posting

Netflix is looking for a Product Manager – Machine Learning Platform and the estimated compensation for the position is expected to be between $300,000 and $900,000 per year.

The job posting has been criticized due to the timing of the writers’ and actors’ strikes, especially considering that one of the key demands of the strike is to prevent the replacement of writers and actors with artificial intelligence. An example comes from actor Shaan Sharma who is part of the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee, who comments on the topic of corporate interest in AI:

“With artificial intelligence, they now have the technology and are fighting to try to alter the proposals we have to protect our members. They’ve tried…to have the right to scan us, own our likeness in perpetuity, including after we’re dead, use us in their movies without any consent, without any compensation to our performers, especially background performers. It’s inhumane. It is dystopian.”

Let’s take a deeper look behind this ad.

Netflix is developing machine learning (ML) allegedly to create ‘better’ content, from TV shows to movies and series. These advancements aim to ensure that the content aligns more closely with users’ preferences and demands, utilizing progressively sophisticated algorithms.

Is Netflix searching for an AI expert to replace creators and actors? Or is the media company leaning towards a new market segment: video games, where it has started to compete with Google, Meta, and Microsoft?

Regardless of their intentions, Netflix should have paid more attention to how this job posting might play during the labor action.
