Biden Addresses Risks of A.I. in San Francisco Debate

“We’ll see more technological change in the next 10 years than in the last 50 years.”

A.I. is such a controversial topic that President Biden convened a group of technology leaders in San Francisco to debate the “risks and enormous promises” of artificial intelligence. “We’ll see more technological change in the next 10 years than we saw in the last 50 years,” Biden said as the meeting with eight technology experts from academia and advocacy groups started. “A.I. is already driving that change,” Biden said at the conference attended by, among others, Tristan Harris, executive director of the Center for Human Technology; Jim Steyer, the CEO of Common Sense Media; Joy Buolamwin, founder of the Algorithmic Justice League. California Gov. Gavin Newsom was also in attendance.

In May, Biden’s administration brought together tech CEOs at the White House to discuss these issues, with the Democratic president telling them, “What you’re doing has enormous potential and enormous danger.” The White House Chief of Staff is spearheading the development of vital actions to be taken by the federal government in relation to artificial intelligence. Top officials are dedicating significant time and effort to this critical issue, meeting two to three times weekly in addition to their regular duties. The administration is calling for private companies to make firm commitments to managing the potential risks associated with A.I. Technology.

The stakes are high, and everybody must take this matter seriously.

Biden is also in the San Francisco area to raise money for his 2024 reelection campaign.
