Writers’ Strike: Studios Suspend Shows, Movies, Deals with Writers and Producers

Just days into the work stoppage, major TV studios have started sending letters telling writers and producers their overall deals are suspended.

The writers’ strike is starting to affect Hollywood productions. The Duffer Brothers, the duo behind Stranger Things (and showrunners of the Netflix hit), announced on Twitter that the show’s fifth and final season’s production would have to halt due to the strike. “Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is impossible during this strike,” Matt and Ross Duffer tweeted. “We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all return to work. Until then — over and out. #wgastrong.”

The ’80s thriller is not the only casualty. Shows such as Daredevil: Born Again, Billions, Severance, Evil, the spinoff of Games of Thrones, A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, and Good Trouble have also been stopped.

On the movie front, Marvel Studios is shutting down preproduction on its vampire thriller Blade, starring Mahershala Ali, which was set to begin filming next month in Atlanta. The feature project became the first tentpole movie impacted by the strike.

The writers’ strike is also impacting overall deals. Major TV studios have started to send letters to writers/producers under broad and first-look agreements, telling them their contracts are being suspended. “Warner Bros. Television, Universal Studio Group, CBS Studios and Disney Television Studios’ 20th Television, HBO and ABC Signature are among those that have sent such notifications, with Sony Pictures Television relaying the message in conversations with representatives or informal emails,” writes Nellie Andreeva on Deadline. Streaming services are doing the same: “Netflix has started notifying reps that overall deals for writers-producers who are not in productions are being suspended,” writes Andreeva, who explains: “Suspending deals is considered standard practice during a strike; it is the potential termination that many are fearing. Evoking the infamous force majeure clause, the major studios cut dozens of overall and other producing deals in January 2008, about two months into the 2007-08 writers’ strike, along with significant portions of their development slates.”
