Italy’s Coming of Age Thriller “The Gymnasts” Licensed to Over 30 Territories

The deal was confirmed at the Berlinale Series Market.

Coming-of-age Italian thriller The Gymnasts has been licensed to over 30 territories, London-based super indie All3Media International confirmed at the Berlinale Series Market.

Based on Ilaria Bernardini’s Italian bestselling novel Corpo Libero, the six-part series features a team of elite female teen gymnasts competing in the snowbound Italian Alps. The stakes in career terms could hardly be higher: selection for the Olympics. “As tensions and obsessions escalate within the team, and the drama of adolescence clashes with the brutal pressures of competitive training, a ticking time bomb is created,” the synopsis reads.

The Gymnasts is produced by the Oscar-winning team at Indigo Film, behind Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty, in co-production with ZDF Neo’s German company Network Movie, in collaboration with Rai Fiction and Paramount+ and in association with All3Media International.

The series is directed by documentarian Cosima Spender (Palio), in her first fiction project, and Valerio Bonelli, whose credits include SanPa: Sins of the Savior. The cast includes Suburra stars Fiorenza Tessari, Barbara Chichiarelli, and Filippo Nigro, with the role of coach Alex.

“Spearheaded by the collaboration of Paramount+ Italia, Paramount +/Viacom has acquired rights to countries such Australia, South Korea, Canada, and the U.K,” John Hopewell writes on Variety. Among newly announced territories are: New Zealand, where “Gymnasts” will air on Paramount+/Viacom, Greece (pay TV/streamer Cosmote), Finland (MTV), and Sweden (TV4).
