Oscar Nominations 2023

The nominations have just been announced, and Italy will be represented by Alba Rohrwacher and Aldo Signoretti nominated in two categories: Best Short Film and Makeup.

Alba Rohrwacher’s short film “The Pupils” is based on a greeting card written by Elsa Morante. Produced by Alfonso Cuaron for Disney+, the short is a little Christmas story that contains a powerful strength. Shot in Super 16, but in 35mm format, “The Pupils” (the Italian title is “Le Pupille”) is a coming-of-age fable centered around the innocence and fantasy of little girls at a Catholic boarding school in the run-up to Christmas during an imaginary wartime. “Le Pupille is an incredibly beautiful film that places Alice Rohrwacher’s impressive writing and directing talent on full display,” said Peter Rice, chairman, Disney General Entertainment.

Veteran Italian make-up artist Aldo Signoretti has received an Oscar nomination for his work on Baz Luhrmann’s biopic “Elvis”. Born in Rome, Signoretti has had three nominations in the past for: Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! (2001), Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto (2006), and Paolo Sorrentino’s Il divo (2010).

Everything Everywhere All at Once leads the nominees for the 95th Academy Awards. The film scored 11 nominations, including best picture, where it will compete along with All Quiet on the Western Front, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, The Fabelmans, TárTop Gun: Maverick, Triangle of Sadness, and Women Talking.

The 95th Academy Awards are due to be held on March 12, 2023.
