Cinecittà 2026: A New Chapter for Italy’s Iconic Studios

Founded in 1937 and long synonymous with the golden age of Italian and international cinema, Cinecittà is once again at the center of the global production map — and the numbers tell the story clearly.

The most visible sign of this momentum came in March, when Netflix officially began production on its live-action Assassin’s Creed series at the Rome studios. Directed by Johan Renck (Chernobyl), the show tells an original story set in Rome in 64 AD,  with principal photography starting on March 9 and currently expected to run until mid‑October; industry reports point to a likely 2027 debut.

Assassin’s Creed is far from an isolated case. Cinecittà has recently hosted major international projects such as Mel Gibson’s sequel The Resurrection of the Christ, which relies on large-scale sets and multiple soundstages during its Rome shoot and has been using Cinecittà’s biggest stages throughout its production. Recent high-profile titles connected to Rome and the Lazio region also include Ridley Scott’s post‑apocalyptic feature The Dog Stars, filmed in 2025 across locations in and around Rome and central Italy, with Cinecittà playing a strategic role within this wider production ecosystem. In this context, international producers consistently highlight the combination of highly skilled Italian crews, state‑of‑the‑art infrastructure, and the creative and logistical advantages of working in and around Rome as decisive factors in choosing Cinecittà.

Much of this renewed confidence is built on a concrete foundation. Cinecittà’s investment plan — set to conclude in June 2026 — has delivered five new soundstages, the renovation of four existing ones, 21,000 square meters of production space, and 10 hectares of backlot, funded through a major investment package of more than €200 million under Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), backed by the European Union. The studio also closed 2025 with a net profit of €1.1 million — a significant milestone after a period of disruption caused by the pandemic and the broader slowdown in the global screen industries. The pace of activity speaks for itself. All large soundstages are currently occupied, and on May 6 this year’s David di Donatello Awards ceremony will inaugurate Cinecittà’s brand‑new Teatro 23.

Welcoming the Assassin’s Creed production, CEO Manuela Cacciamani said that she was honored Netflix had chosen Cinecittà’s studios and sets for such a spectacular, ambitious series — and stressed that the project confirms the worldwide reputation of the Studios while also reflecting the trust placed in Cinecittà’s skilled workforce and art department, which are collaborating on the creation of truly spectacular sets.

As it approaches its 90th anniversary in 2027, Cinecittà is making the case that legacy and modernity are not opposites. The studio that gave the world Fellini’s dreamscapes and Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns is now the same studio expanding its Roman backlot and soundstage offering for a new generation of global franchises.
