HBO Max launches in Italy with premium series and Italian original productions

HBO Max officially debuts in Italy on 13 January, marking an expansion of the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming presence in Europe and further integrating Italy into the global premium content ecosystem. The platform brings together HBO Originals, Max Originals, titles from Warner Bros. Pictures and Warner Bros. Television, DC Universe content, and live sports from Eurosport within a single service.

The Italian launch is supported by a selection of flagship scripted titles. Available from day one is The Pitt, the medical drama starring Noah Wyle, set in a high-intensity emergency room. The series was recently recognized at the Golden Globe Awards, where it received the award for Best Television Drama Series, while Noah Wyle was honored with Best Actor in a Television Drama Series. From 19 January, the catalogue will expand with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the new HBO Original spin-off set in the Game of Thrones universe.

A key milestone in the rollout is scheduled for 20 February, with the premiere of Portobello, directed by Marco Bellocchio and produced by Our Films and Kavac Film. HBO Max’s first Italian HBO Original production, the series revisits the Enzo Tortora case, one of the most significant judicial controversies in modern Italian history. Portobello was presented out of competition at the Venice Film Festival and brings to the platform a major work by one of the most influential and acclaimed figures in Italian cinema.

Italian original productions play a central role in HBO Max’s local strategy. In addition to Portobello, the platform has confirmed further Italian projects, including a scripted series on the Melania Rea case, as well as upcoming docuseries such as Gina Lollobrigida: Diva Contesa and Saman, reflecting a sustained investment in locally produced content with cultural and social relevance.

Beyond entertainment, HBO Max will also offer a broad live sports lineup. All events of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games will be available live and included in every subscription plan, alongside year-round Eurosport coverage featuring Grand Slam tennis, cycling, and other major international competitions.

Italy is among the European territories included in HBO Max’s January expansion, which also covers Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The launch reflects a broader strategy combining internationally established IP with premium local productions, contributing to the evolving relationship between global streaming platforms and national audiovisual ecosystems.
