Italy in Netflix’s Engagement Report: “Deceitful Love” Tops the Charts
Netflix has released its latest Engagement Report covering the second half of 2024, providing insight into the platform’s most-watched content globally.
The Netflix Engagement Report is a biannual report published by Netflix that provides detailed data on content consumption on the platform. This report covers approximately 99% of all viewing time on Netflix, offering a comprehensive overview of user viewing habits.
The primary metric used in the report is the number of views, calculated by dividing the total hours watched by the content’s duration. For example, if a two-hour movie accumulates 200,000 hours of viewing, it is considered to have been watched 100,000 times.
The report includes both Netflix original productions and licensed titles, providing a ranking of the most popular content based on the number of views and total hours watched.
Among Italian titles, Deceitful Love (Inganno) the melodrama directed by Pappi Corsicato, stands out as the most-watched Italian title on Netflix between July and December 2024. With 27.2 million views, it ranks 24th overall in the report. For comparison, the most-viewed title during this period was Squid Game Season 2, which amassed 86.5 million views. Filmed across stunning locations in Naples and Amalfi Coast, Deceitful Love (Inganno) captivated audiences with its gripping narrative and breathtaking scenery, contributing to its global appeal. In contrast, Supersex, the leading Italian title in the previous Engagement Report, saw a significant drop in viewership. While it had 10.3 million views in the first half of 2024, placing 134th, it recorded just 1.3 million views in this latest report. Despite the decline, these figures indicate that the controversial miniseries successfully captured audience attention, at least for a time, within the Italian subscriber base.
Other notable Italian productions include La legge di Lidia Poët, with its second season garnering 7.9 million views, while the first season accumulated 4.7 million views. Everything Calls for Salvation (Tutto chiede salvezza) (both seasons), Supersex, and the first season of Di4ri also surpassed the one-million-view mark. The remaining Italian titles saw viewership figures ranging between 100,000 and 900,000 views.
In total, the report lists just under 70 Italian TV titles, highlighting Italy’s growing presence on Netflix, even if most productions struggle to compete with global blockbusters. While Inganno’s performance demonstrates that Italian series can reach significant audiences worldwide, the overall viewership numbers suggest that there is still room for improvement in capturing Netflix’s massive global subscriber base.
