You Tube: TV Overtakes Mobile as the Primary Viewing Device

In a recent annual letter, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced that TV screens have surpassed mobile devices as the primary platform for watching YouTube in the United States. Currently, users watch over 1 billion hours of content per day on their TVs. This shift is attributed to the app’s pre-installation on smart TVs and its user-friendly interface, making access easier.

YouTube offers a wide range of content, including Shorts, podcasts, live streams, and traditional TV shows, attracting an increasingly diverse audience. A notable trend involves children aged 4 to 15, who watch 45% of their YouTube content directly on TV screens.

Additionally, YouTube TV has surpassed 8 million subscribers, while YouTube Premium and YouTube Music subscriptions have exceeded 100 million. Looking ahead, YouTube plans to further enhance the TV app experience and introduce new benefits for Premium subscribers.

Beyond changing viewing habits, YouTube is investing in AI-powered tools to support creators. According to Mohan, while generative models are impressive, creators find practical tools more beneficial for their daily work, such as generating video ideas, titles, and thumbnails. One example is auto dubbing, which allows videos to be translated into multiple languages with a single click. Over 40% of the total watch time for dubbed videos comes from viewers choosing to listen in a different language. This month, the feature will become available to all creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with expansion to more languages throughout the year.
