Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards: January 5 and 12, 2025, Los Angeles
Italy’s Role in Hollywood’s Award Season: Guadagnino, Vermiglio, Ripley, and My Brilliant Friend
The Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards, two of the most prestigious markers of awards season, are shaping the road to the Oscars. With nominations announced in quick succession, these honors reveal the strongest contenders and emerging trends in Hollywood’s annual race for gold. Italy is also well represented this year.
The Critics Choice Association (CCA) unveiled its nominations for the 30th edition of its awards, scheduled for January 12 in Santa Monica, on Thursday. Leading the pack are Conclave and Wicked, each with 11 nominations, followed by Emilia Pérez and Dune: Part Two, both with 10. Earlier this week, the Golden Globes, set for January 5, highlighted similar titles.
.Among the Critics’ Choice nominees for Best Picture are A Complete Unknown, Anora, The Brutalist, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, Nickel Boys, Sing Sing, The Substance, and Wicked. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which organizes the Golden Globes, selected all these films, along with a few additional titles, as it divides its awards into Drama and Musical/Comedy categories. For example, the Globes’ Musical/Comedy category includes Challengers, a romantic triangle directed by Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino and produced by MGM and Amazon Studios. Guadagnino will also attend the Golden Globes to support Daniel Craig’s Best Actor nomination for another of his 2024 films, Queer.
Isabella Rossellini earned nominations from both the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes for her supporting role as Sister Agnes in Conclave, a drama set within the Vatican’s secretive election process. Its German director, Edward Berger, already an Oscar winner for All Quiet on the Western Front, chose to film entirely in Italy, utilizing locations such as Cinecittà, the Royal Palace of Caserta, and the narrow streets of Rome.
In the Best Non-English Language Film category at the Golden Globes, Italy is represented by director Maura Delpero’s Vermiglio, which captivated audiences in Venice but did not secure a Critics Choice nomination.
In the technical categories, costume designer Massimo Cantini Parrini is recognized for his work in Pablo Larraín’s Maria, a portrayal of the legendary opera singer Callas co-produced by Italy’s The Apartment. Additionally, The Wild Robot competes for both the Globe and Critics Choice awards for Best Original Score. The music was recorded by an orchestra conducted by Italian maestro Fabrizio Mancinelli, a regular collaborator of composer Kris Bowers and a member of the Academy.
Following the financial and racial scandals that rocked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 2021, the organization restructured as a for-profit entity under Eldridge Industries, led by Todd Boehly. Meanwhile, the Critics Choice Awards continue to represent the largest critics association in North America. Both organizations also honor excellence in television production, and Italy is once again in the spotlight. Producer Enzo Sisti and associate producer Guja Quaranta are contenders at both ceremonies for Ripley, a series based on Patricia Highsmith’s novels and filmed entirely in Italy, which is nominated in the Best Limited Series category. Additionally, the Critics Choice Awards recognized as a contender for Best Drama Series the fourth season of My Brilliant Friend, directed by Laura Bispuri and produced by Wildside, Fandango, and The Apartment for Rai Fiction and HBO.
