The 11 Italians Competing for Emmy Awards with Ripley
Among the many productions competing at the Emmy Awards this year, Ripley stands out and is expected to triumph in multiple categories. This eight-episode series, directed by Steven Zaillian, revives the charming con-artist character created by Patricia Highsmith in the mid-50s and was filmed almost entirely in Italy
The story unfolds across various Italian locations, including Rome, the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Naples, Anzio, Palermo, and Venice. “Overall, the experience of filming in Italy has been incredibly rewarding. The talent of the actors, artisans, and technicians is of the highest caliber,” remarks Clayton Townsend, who collaborated with Italian producer Enzo Sisti during pre-production and for 164 out of 178 shooting days (with only 7 days spent in New York City).
Enzo Sisti, a seasoned producer well-known for facilitating Hollywood productions in Italy, also highlights that it wasn’t just the stunning Italian landscapes that were showcased: “Our crew was composed of 97% Italian technicians and craftsmen, who once again demonstrated their high level of professionalism, preparation, experience, and talent,” he states.
As a result, the list of nominees ready to take the stage at the Peacock Theatre on September 8 and 15 to collect a statuette is enriched with many names from Italian cinema. Produced by Showtime and later picked up by Netflix, Ripley heads into the big night with 13 nominations. Among the nominees across various categories, 11 are Italian.
Competing for Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program are art director Alex Santucci and set decorator Alessandra Querzola. Francesco Vedovati and Barbara Giordani are vying for Outstanding Casting for a Limited or Anthology Series. The costume department is entirely Italian, with costume designers Maurizio Millenotti and Gianni Casalnuovo, wardrobe supervisor Ernest Camilleri, and assistant costume designers Teresa D’Arienzo and Francesco Morabito competing for Outstanding Period Costumes for a Limited or Anthology Series. In the sound department, Maurizio Argentieri is nominated for Production Sound Mixer, while Gaia Bussolati is contending for Best Visual Effects Supervisor.
Alongside Baby Reindeer (Netflix), Fargo (FX), Lessons in Chemistry (Apple TV), and True Detective – Night Country (HBO), Ripley is contending for the most prestigious award: Outstanding Limited Or Anthology Series.
A win would mean its producers, including Sisti, who has long worked to make Hollywood meet Italy (for example, The Passion of the Christ, Mission: Impossible III, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and The Equalizer), would take the stage to accept the honor.
