Tim Burton on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice at Venice Film Festival

‘Not a Sequel Cash Grab’—A Passion Project Met with Enthusiastic Reception

At the Venice Film Festival, Tim Burton, alongside his star-studded cast, unveiled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the much-anticipated follow-up to the 1988 cult classic. Thirty-six years after Beetlejuice charmed audiences, Burton and Michael Keaton have returned with the next chapter of this supernatural comedy, set to have its world premiere tonight after a press screening earlier today.

Speaking to the press, Burton expressed his deep connection to the film and its characters, emphasizing that this project was far from a commercial venture. “As much as I love it, I never understood why it was a success” Burton said of the original Beetlejuice. “I could never place the film as something other than personal to me. So, after all these years, being able to work with Michael, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara again made it more personal and special, along with the new cast members Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, Justin Theroux, and Willem Dafoe, new people who got into the spirit of it. It is a very personal project for me”.

Burton explained that his focus for the sequel was driven by passion, not profit, as he refrained from re-watching the original Beetlejuice during preparation. He wanted to channel the “spirit” of the original rather than create a stereotypical sequel for financial gain. He also reflected on how making this movie helped him rediscover his love for filmmaking after feeling disillusioned with the industry.

In Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, three generations of the Deetz family return to Winter River following a tragic event, once again confronted by Beetlejuice. Lydia Deetz (Ryder) faces chaos when her daughter Astrid (Ortega) unlocks the door to the Afterlife, allowing Beetlejuice to re-enter their lives, bringing with him his signature mischief and mayhem. Michael Keaton, returning as the “Ghost with the Most”, expressed his enthusiasm calling the motion picture “100% original and unique” while jokingly claiming that this new cast “might be better than the former, which was impossible”.

Burton, meanwhile, acknowledged the impact of his recent Wednesday series at Netflix but stated that his decision to revisit Beetlejuice was motivated by a longstanding desire to work again with Keaton and Ryder, re-energized by the success of his Netflix show. When asked about the possibility of a third film, Burton humorously remarked: “It took 35 years to do this one. For another, I’d be over 100. But who knows, with medical science, anything’s possible”.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice premieres out of competition at the Venice Film Festival and will roll out internationally beginning September 4, with North American audiences getting the chance to see it from September 6.
