Warner Bros. Shakes Up Gaming Industry with Major Acquisition of ‘MultiVersus’ Developer

Warner Bros. Games has announced the acquisition of Player First Games, the studio behind the popular free-to-play platform fighter MultiVersus. This strategic move marks a significant expansion for Warner Bros. Games, enhancing its development capabilities and solidifying its presence in the competitive gaming market.

Under the new arrangement, Player First Games will continue to operate under the leadership of co-founders Tony Huynh and Chris White. Huynh, who serves as head of Player First Games, and White, the head of technology, will now report to Carlos Barbosa, vice president and studio head of Warner Bros. Games San Diego. David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Games, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “We have worked with Player First Games over several years to create and launch MultiVersus, and we are very pleased to welcome this talented team to Warner Bros. Games. The bright and creative team at Player First Games adds to our extensive development capabilities.”

Huynh echoed this sentiment, adding, “Our team is excited to join the Warner Bros. Games family, and we feel that this will be great for MultiVersus overall. We are working to make our game experience the best it can be, and having our development team integrated with the publisher is optimum for the players”,

MultiVersus features a dynamic roster of characters from Warner Bros. Discovery franchises. Since its launch on May 28, the game has been available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. The acquisition comes at a time when the gaming industry has seen significant layoffs and studio closures, impacting major companies such as Microsoft’s Xbox, Sony’s PlayStation, EA, Take-Two Interactive, and Riot Games.

Warner Bros. Games, a division of Warner Bros. Discovery, is known for its robust portfolio of interactive entertainment content. The company is committed to developing and publishing high-quality games across various platforms, including console, PC, and mobile. Warner Bros. Games San Diego, established in 2019, is dedicated to creating free-to-play, cross-platform titles, with MultiVersus being a prime example of its innovative approach.

Player First Games, based in Los Angeles, has gained recognition for its focus on creating engaging games and fostering passionate gaming communities. With the company now part of Warner Bros. Games, fans can expect continued updates, new characters, and enhancements to MultiVersus, ensuring a rich and evolving gaming experience. This move not only strengthens Warner Bros. The future of MultiVersus looks promising, with the combined expertise of both studios poised to bring even more innovation and excitement to the game.
