Vanished Into the Night: A Global Hit on Netflix
The Italian Thriller Produced by Picomedia Captivates Audiences Worldwide on Netflix
Vanished Into the Night, one of the most watched movies on Netflix worldwide, has captivated audiences since its release on July 11. The thriller, starring Annabelle Wallis and Riccardo Scamarcio, tells the gripping story of a divorced couple in southern Italy whose children are kidnapped for ransom. This rare milestone for an Italian film has propelled it to the top of Netflix’s global charts.
In the film, Wallis, known for her role as Grace Helen in Peaky Blinders, plays a U.S. psychiatrist living in the scenic Puglia region after her breakup with Pietro, portrayed by Italian A-list actor Riccardo Scamarcio. When their young children go missing on the outskirts of the port city of Bari, Pietro embarks on a dangerous mission to retrieve them, reconnecting with a criminal from his past.
Directed by the prolific Renato De Maria (Hotel Fear, Paz!), Vanished Into the Night soared to No. 1 on Netflix’s non-English films list just days after its global release. The film maintained its top position on the platform’s Global Top 10 chart for the week of July 8-July 14. According to streaming analytics firm FlixPatrol, it was the most viewed movie on Netflix on July 18.
The film blends classic noir and family dynamics, adapted from the Argentinean thriller Seventh Floor (Séptimo) directed by Patxi Amezcua. The screenplay was crafted by renowned Italian screenwriters Francesca Marciano (A Brighter Tomorrow) and Luca Infascelli (The Catholic School), with Giacomo Durzi (Baby) serving as the creative producer.
Produced by Roberto Sessa via his Picomedia label, which recently joined Fremantle after the acquisition of Asacha Media Group, Vanished Into the Night showcases the international potential of high-quality storytelling. Sessa remarked to Variety that topping Netflix’s global chart is a “source of great pride” and evidence that a movie’s success is driven by its story and quality, not just by language.
The Italian adaptation of Seventh Floor is set in Puglia, with filming locations including Bari, Otranto, and the Salento countryside.
