Giffoni Film Festival 2024
Giffoni Film Festival (19-28 July, Giffoni Valle Piana, Italy)
The 54th edition of the Giffoni Film Festival, running from July 19th to 28th, invites participants to rediscover paths and uncover the invisible connections that exist despite apparent distances, inspiring new bonds and revealing our incredible closeness.
The Giffoni Film Festival, established in 1971 in Giffoni Valle Piana, Italy, near Salerno, is a significant international film event deeply rooted in Italy. Renowned as one of the most unique and celebrated festivals globally, it primarily focuses on children and youth, marking a profound impact on both Italian and international cinematic landscapes. Annually, it attracts thousands of young people from various countries who participate as jurors. These jurors, composed entirely of children and teenagers, watch films, engage in discussions, and vote to award the best films in various categories. This distinctive setup not only gives young people a significant voice but also enables them to engage critically with media, fostering an appreciation for cinema and encouraging their development as discerning viewers.
This year’s theme, “The Illusion of Distance,” explores the dangers of isolation felt by new generations and the fear of the ‘other’. The festival will take place in the Multimedia Valley, a vision transformed into reality through the dedication and passion of its creators, now a globally recognized cultural industry.
Giffoni continues to be a hub of cultural interaction, drawing 5,000 jurors from 33 countries. Claudio Gubitosi, the founder, emphasizes the festival’s role in challenging its audience and participants to reflect on contemporary issues of distance and proximity. Despite a challenging year, Giffoni’s commitment remains unwavering, providing not just a film festival but a cultural hub that fosters dialogue and innovation.
The program is rich with themes close to the hearts of its young audience, exploring ethnic discrimination, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, sports as redemption, parenting challenges, sexual discovery, and the beauty of defying labels. Over 3,000 submissions have been carefully curated to present the best of international cinema, with jurors deciding the winners of the Gryphon Award.
Giffoni is also embracing the world of podcasts, partnering with MNcomm and Dopcast to host special sessions featuring prominent Italian podcasts, enhancing cultural conversations and community engagement.
Institutional guests, including politicians and cultural figures, will offer profound reflections, starting with Vincenzo De Luca, President of the Campania Region. Notable discussions are expected with Giancarlo Giorgetti, Minister of Economy and Finance, and Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, among others.
The premiere of Carlos Saldanha’s film, “Harold’s Magical World,” is highly anticipated. Directed by two-time Oscar nominee Carlos Saldanha (Ferdinand, Gone Nutty short, Ice Age, Robots, Rio), and produced by John Davis, the live-action hybrid family adventure/comedy also star Alfred Molina and Zooey Deschanel. The film’s screenplay is written by David Guion & Michael Handelman (Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Slumberland). Harold will reach Italian screens on Sept. 12, produced by Sony Pictures and distributed by Eagle Pictures and US screens on Aug 2ns with the title of “Harold and the Purple Crayon”.
