AVPSummit June 10-12, 2024 Reggio Calabria, Italy
Third edition of the Audio-Visual Producers Summit wrapped up with interesting insights
The AVPSummit is a three-day event focusing on the Italian and international audiovisual industry, bringing together representatives from prestigious production and distribution companies, television networks, digital platforms, and independent studios. The third edition of the Audio-Visual Producers Summit took place in Calabria, gathering 44 industry leaders from France, the UK, the US, and Italy for 14 sessions, including panels, keynotes, and spotlights.
The summit opened with a focus on Sky Studios. Emanuele Marchesi, Head of Editorial Content, emphasized the studios’ diverse programming strategy aimed at different audiences, including shows like “Call My Agent – Italia” and “M – Il figlio del secolo.” The arrival of streaming services significantly changed the landscape, demanding a constant focus on audience targeting, exemplified by the upcoming “Gomorra” prequel.
A comparative analysis of production incentives was the topic of another panel, featuring Daphné Lora from France’s CNC, Agnieszka Moody from the UK’s BFI, and Nicola Borrelli from Italy’s Ministry of Culture.
In a panel featuring Rai, Maria Pia Ammirati, Director of Rai Fiction, and Paolo Del Brocco, CEO of Rai Cinema, discussed the internationalization of Italian productions. Rai Fiction saw a 50% increase in sales since 2019. Ammirati highlighted the success of locally flavored series such as “Imma Tataranni – Sostituto procuratore” and “Mare Fuori,” which have found international acclaim. Partnerships with foreign players are crucial, as seen in co-productions like “L’amica geniale” with HBO. Del Brocco noted that while Italian films might not become blockbusters, they are widely sold and invited to international festivals, citing examples like Matteo Garrone’s “Io Capitano.”
Three major events have shaped the industry in recent years: the pandemic, the rise of streaming services, and the US film industry strike. Del Brocco also pointed out the shift in mainstream US productions towards special effects-heavy franchises, often at the expense of narrative development.
Mediaset’s Daniele Cesarano discussed the importance of targeting specific audiences with genres like melodramas and romantic comedies, which cater to mainstream tastes. Successful productions include the Turkish series “Terra Amara” and Italian series like “Viola come il mare” and “Maria Corleone.”
The event concluded with a roundtable on the future challenges and prospects for Hollywood studios, featuring industry figures like John August, DeVon (Franklin Franklin Entertainment’s CEO), Neils Juul (No Fat Ego’s CEO) and Lori McCreary (Revelations Entertainment’s CEO), Veronica Sullivan (Senior VP at NBC Universal) and Gary Lucchesi (Revelations Entertainment and President Emeritus of the PGA). The discussion highlighted the need to create content representing America’s diverse communities, invest in innovative training for new screenwriters, and attract increasingly diverse audiences. There was a consensus on the importance of bringing inspiring character-driven stories back to cinemas.
Calabria is currently hosting Lux Vide and Rai’s big budget reboot of classic TV series Sandokan at a variety of locations and at studios that have been purpose-built for the show. The President of the Calabrian Film Commission, Anton Giulio Grande, told Screen the series could be a ‘game changer’ for the region both in terms of attracting other productions and tourists drawn to its landscapes. Among projects recently shot in Calabria are Disney+ series The Good Mothers and the Manetti brothers’ Diabolik Chi Sei.
The AVPSummit is a format by APA – Associazione Produttori Audiovisivi, organized with the support of MiC – Ministry of Culture, Directorate General for Cinema and Audiovisual, MAECI – Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation/ICE, and the Calabria Film Commission, in collaboration with Cinecittà, MPA – Motion Picture Association, PGA – Producers Guild of America, CNC – Centre National du Cinéma et de l’image animée, Unifrance, and BFI – British Film Institute.
The Italian Trade Agency -Los Angeles Office has coordinated the delegation of 9 US producers.
