Apple Enters AI Arena with iPhone Upgrades and ChatGPT Partnership

Apple is stepping into the world of artificial intelligence (AI) with new features for its iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. At the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple announced updates available later this year, under the banner Apple Intelligence. The Cupertino company is integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Siri to make it smarter and more helpful. “This is more than artificial intelligence; it’s personal intelligence,” said CEO Tim Cook.

iPhone users will have free access to ChatGPT through Siri, with advanced features for ChatGPT subscribers. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted: “With Apple, we’re making AI’s benefits more accessible to everyone.”

Besides ChatGPT integration, Siri will get a major update. It will now use flashing lights to signal its presence and handle more tasks, including interactions with third-party devices. This is part of Apple’s effort to make Siri more versatile. These AI tools will work best on newer Apple devices. To fully utilize them, users will need the iPhone 15 Pro or newer models. Macs from 2020 onwards will also support these updates. Apple’s AI features aim to boost productivity and creativity. One notable feature, Genmojis, allows users to create personalized emojis to match their messages’ tone.

“Our aim with AI is to empower users, not replace them,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering. Users can also disable any unwanted AI features.

The WWDC presentation reassured stakeholders of Apple’s place in the AI tech race. While Google and Samsung have AI-focused smartphones, Apple combines design innovation with strong privacy protections. Despite the excitement, Apple’s stock dipped nearly 2% after the announcement. Yet, Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities called the event “historic” for the tech  company, underscoring its role in transforming technology.

Apple also introduced Rich Communications Service (RCS) to iMessage, improving text quality and security between iPhones and Android devices. The blue and green text bubbles will stay. Additionally, Apple is rolling out a feature to schedule texts, allowing users to send messages at specific times, either manually or with AI.

For the second year, Apple created significant buzz at WWDC. Last year, it showcased the Vision Pro mixed-reality headset, focusing on “spatial computing.” This AI strategy emphasizes user privacy. Most AI processes will happen on the device, minimizing reliance on cloud services, which protects privacy and reduces costs. “Apple’s AI will know your personal data without collecting it,” reassured Federighi, highlighting the commitment of the multinational tech corporation to privacy, with advanced chip technology and private cloud solutions.
