Sony Pictures and Italy’s Wildside Team up for Co-Production Deal
Sony Pictures International Productions (SPIP) and Wildside, a Fremantle Company, have struck a new multi-picture co-production deal to develop and produce local films in Italy.
According to reports, the first fruit of this collaboration between Hollywood and Rome is already in the pipeline. It is the new comedy from director Alessandro Genovesi, Upside Down Family. Written by Genovesi (When Mom is Away, 7 Women and a Murder and the recent Netflix’s acclaimed drama The Tearsmith) and Giulio Carrieri (Prime Video’s Everybody Loves Diamonds) the film stars some of the most loved Italian talents, such as Luca Argentero (Unique Brothers, The Legendary Giulia and Other Miracles, DOC-In your hands), Valentina Lodovini (When Mom is Away, Welcome to the South), Licia Maglietta (Bread and Tulips) and newcomers Martina Bernocchi, Carlo Alberto Materazzo and Chiara Pasquali.
The project is based on the 2021 French comedy Le Sens de la famille by Jean-Patrick Benes. Executive producer is Sonia Rovai, Wildside’s new managing director who took over from Mario Gianani as of the end of February 2024. “I am very honored that my first Wildside production – she said in a statement – was born from an important collaboration with Shebnem Askin and the SPIP team. Sony is a large international group with a strong local strategy, which invests in our industry and our best talent to create quality content and great entertainment. I consider it a sign of great trust and appreciation. I hope this will be the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration.”
Enthusiasm also filters in from Sony Pictures headquarters, in Culver City: “We are thrilled to enter this new working relationship with Sonia Rovai and her entire team at Wildside, and we cannot believe our good fortune to have a powerhouse like Alessandro Genovesi helm our first production together,” said Shebnem Askin, EVP, Creative Production & Head of Sony Pictures International Productions.
This is a major new development and production deal for Fremantle, following the one announced in mid-April with Fabula, the production company set up by Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín and his producer brother Juan de Dios Larraín, and the acquisitions of Picomedia and Stand by Me last March 2024. Sony, on the other hand, continues to be at the center of major acquisition rumors involving Paramount Global: together with Apollo, it has submitted a $26 billion bid to take over the conglomerate.
