Scam Artist Tom Ripley Returns on Screen in a Netflix’s limited series filmed in Italy
With its captivating display of white shirts, languid leisure, and sun-drenched Italian opulence, the 1999 rendition of The Talented Mr. Ripley continues to be celebrated as a cinematic masterpiece. It’s hard to imagine any remake could top that twisted triangle between Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow. However, Ripley, a new black-and-white show coming to Netflix worldwide on April 4th, manages to achieve just that.
Based on Patricia Highsmith’s acclaimed novels, the limited series drama will feature Andrew Scott (known for Fleabag, Sherlock, and the recent film All Of Us Strangers) as Tom Ripley. Set in the early 1960s in New York, the eight episodes follow Tom, a cunning con artist enlisted by a wealthy industrialist to journey to Italy and convince his wayward son to return home. “Tom’s acceptance of the job marks the beginning of a complex existence filled with deceit, fraud, and murder,” reads Netflix’s description.
In addition to Scott in the titular role, Johnny Flynn (recognized for Lovesick, Emma, and Stardust, where he portrayed David Bowie) stars as Dickie Greenleaf, the rich loafer who Ripley is attempting to lure home, while Dakota Fanning (The Equalizer, The First Lady) appears as Marge Sherwood, Dickie’s girlfriend, who suspects darker motives underlie Tom’s affability. Additional cast include Eliot Sumner, Maurizio Lombardi, Margherita Buy, along with John Malkovich, Kenneth Lonergan, and Ann Cusack.All episodes are directed and written by Steven Zaillian, an Oscar-winning screenwriter for Schindler’s List and a nominee for Awakenings, Gangs of New York, Moneyball, and The Irishman. Ripley is co-produced by Showtime and Endemol Shine North America in association with Entertainment 360 and Filmrights. The executive producers include Steven Zaillian, Garrett Basch, Clayton Townsend, Guymon Casady, Ben Forkner, Sharon Levy, and Philipp Keel of Diogenes.
The story develops in Rome, the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Naples, Anzio, Palermo, and Venice. “Overall, the experience of filming in Italy has been incredibly rewarding. The talent of the actors, artisans, and technicians is of the highest caliber,” remarks Clayton Townsend, who collaborated with Italian counterpart Enzo Sisti during pre production and for 164 out of 178 days of shooting (with only 7 days occurring in New York City). “We required a multitude of locations to recreate the various settings where the story unfolds. It was meticulous work for the team led by production designer David Gropman to find all the pieces and put them together to serve Steve Zaillian’s vision,” adds Townsend, who has worked with Oliver Stone on Born on the Fourth of July, JFK, Natural Born Killers, and recently produced Fast and Furious and The Equalizer’s saga.
