The Hollywood Award Season Kicks Off
The film Oppenheimer triumphs at the Golden Globes.
This year, following the dissolution of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 2023, the Golden Globe Awards have been organized by the newly established Golden Globe Foundation. The HFPA will no longer oversee the ceremony, which is now chaired by the producers at Dick Clark Productions, a subsidiary of Penske Media Eldridge — the joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge that also owns The Hollywood Reporter.
With the Golden Globes, the awards season kicks off. Hollywood’s industry is eager to showcase itself in full swing after the two significant strikes that loomed over 2023, with their consequences still impacting the entire industry.
Televised in 150 countries, the Golden Globes has had new features this year. For the first time, they were held on CBS on the favorable timeslot of Monday, new categories, among which Stand-Up Comedy (Netflix values this genre highly), and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement (Barbie is the winner), which now also includes movies released on streaming platforms and for the first time, gourmet food (dinner had never been served in previous editions) was catered (by Nobu).
Anatomy of a Fall, the French courtroom drama, won Best Screenplay-Motion Picture and Best Motion Picture-Non-English Language over the Italian Io capitano.
Oppenheimer wins big with five awards: Christopher as Director, Cillian Murphy as Male Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, Robert Downey Jr as Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, Best Motion Picture – Drama, and Best Original Score.
Ratings: “In its first year airing on CBS, the Golden Globes hit 9.4 million total viewers, jumping 50% from 2023’s performance, according to time zone-adjusted fast national including Out of Home ratings from Nielsen.” Having the NFL as a lead-in certainly served as a significant advantage.
Diversity and international talent have conquered the Golden Globe this year.
