Critics Choice Awards 2024

Oppenheimer wins big at The Critics Choice Awards held in Los Angeles on January 14th.

The Critics Choice Awards, presented annually by the Critics Choice Association (CCA), recognize achievements in film and television. Established in 1995, these awards are voted on by a large group of critics and entertainment journalists, marking them as a significant indicator of industry excellence. The Critics Choice Awards are widely regarded as reliable predictors of the Academy Awards, particularly in film categories. They encompass a broad range of categories, including best picture, best actor, best actress, and similar categories for television shows, as well as awards for best foreign- language film and best documentary.

Oppenheimer took home eight awards, including best picture, best director for Christopher Nolan, and best supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr. Barbie also enjoyed a successful night, securing six awards, notably for best comedy and best song with “I’m Just Ken.” The event significantly influenced the awards season, bestowing the best actress award on Emma Stone (Poor Things) and the best actor award on Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers). The Bear and Beef dominated the television categories, each winning four awards.

Italy marked its presence with the nomination of The Good Mothers for Best Foreign TV Drama.

Winner at the Berlinale Series Award in February 2023, The Good Mothers is a TV series that centers on women who defy the mafia and provides a female perspective on the downfall of the n’drangheta (Calabrian mafia).

Based on a true story recounted in Alex Perry’s book The Good Mothers, the series features women from the ‘ndrangheta crime family who collaborated with legal prosecutors against their own husbands and fathers. It has earned a Critics Choice Awards nomination for best foreign-language television drama. The show is hailed as a “truly organic collaboration between the U.K. and Italy, ensuring that a great story didn’t risk losing an iota of authenticity.”

Already a winner at the Berlinale Series Award, the show is produced by Juliette Howell, Tessa Ross, and Harriet Spencer for London’s House Productions, which originated the project, and by Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Gangarossa for Rome’s Wildside, a Fremantle company. The project is directed by Julian Jarrold (The Crown, Becoming Jane) and Elisa Amoruso (Chiara Ferragni: Unposted).

America Ferrera received the SeeHer Award, the award that honors the silver screen’s leading women who advocate for gender equality and portray authentic, boundary-pushing characters. In her acceptance speech actress Ferrera talked about growing up as a “first-generation Honduran-American girl in love with TV, film, and theater who desperately wanted to be a part of a storytelling legacy that I could not see myself reflected.”
