Oscar: Matteo Garrone’s ‘Io, Capitano’ Selected For International Feature Film Shortlist
Makeup and hairstyle artisans from Michael Mann’s ‘Ferrari’ also got a nomination in the specific category.
Io Capitano, the Italian candidate for the Oscars, has entered the shortlist of 15 international feature films from which the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science members will choose the final five nominees seven weeks before the ceremony. The announcement of the shortlists for various categories, including documentaries, makeup and hairstyling, score, and song, came at 11 in the morning, Los Angeles time, on Thursday, December 21st.
Among the candidates, another piece of Italy stands out. In the Makeup and Hairstyling category, the artisans from Ferrari, the Italian-American production directed by Michael Mann on the life of Enzo Ferrari, are nominated.
Matteo Garrone’s tale on immigration Io Capitano now competes with films such as Amerikatsi (Armenia), The Monk and the Gun (Bhutan), The Promised Land (Denmark), Fallen Leaves (Finland), The Taste of Things (France), The Teachers’ Lounge (Germany), Godland (Iceland), Perfect Days from Japan, Totem from Mexico, The Mother of All Lies from Morocco, Society of the Snow (Spain), Four Daughters (Tunisia), 20 Days in Mariupol from Ukraine, and The Zone of Interest (United Kingdom).
In addition to Garrone, the shortlist also saw the entry of Wings of Dust by NYC-based documentarist Giorgio Ghiotto in the Documentary Short Film category.
In the Best Live Action Short Film category, Good Boy, directed by Tom Stuart and produced by Elettra Pizzi, also made it through the selection process.
Nominations voting begins on Thursday, January 11th, 2024, and concludes on Tuesday, January 16th, 2024. Nominations for the 96th Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 23rd, 2024. The 96th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 10th, 2024, at the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be televised live on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide.
