Combined Disney Plus and Hulu App Has Streaming’s Most Popular Catalog, Study Finds

The integration of Hulu into the Disney Plus app has yielded a streaming powerhouse, establishing one of the most sought-after content catalogs in the US.

According to a study conducted by Ampere Analysis, the combined streaming services now claim a one-third share of the top 100 most popular movies and TV series titles in the US, outshining even streaming titan Netflix.

The beta phase integration of Hulu into the Disney Plus app, which transpired last week, represents the initial stride in a strategic plan that will culminate in the complete amalgamation of Disney Plus’s family-oriented content with Hulu’s more adult-centric offerings, scheduled to roll out in March. This calculated move forms part of Disney’s broader initiative to deliver a seamless and all-encompassing streaming experience to its user base.

In its third-quarter market audit, Ampere Analysis unveiled compelling statistics highlighting the success of this merger. The combined platform now boasts 33 titles out of the top 100 most popular, surpassing Netflix’s 29. This statistic underscores the effectiveness of the merged library in capturing the diverse preferences of a wide-ranging audience.

Beyond its breadth, the integrated library also excels in depth, featuring 9,578 distinct movie and TV seasons. This places Disney Plus and Hulu second only to Amazon Prime Video in terms of content variety. Notably, this accomplishment was achieved even if Comcast removed over 300 titles from the platform in the process of divesting itself from Hulu.

A noteworthy aspect of this integration lies in the revised pricing strategy. Disney now offers Disney Plus and Hulu as a bundled duo, with pricing starting as low as $9.99 for ad-supported versions and $19.99 a month for the premium, no-commercials iteration.

Approximately 44% of Hulu’s 48.5 million subscribers subscribe to Disney Plus through the Disney Bundle, highlighting the synergy between the two platforms. Joshua Rustage, an analyst at Ampere, emphasized the significance of this integration, stating, “The combined Disney Plus and Hulu catalogue up the content stakes at a time when many are pulling back on content investment.”

Beyond the strategic merger itself, the results of integrating Disney Plus and Hulu have catapulted the combined platform into a streaming juggernaut, well-positioned to dominate the increasingly competitive landscape of subscription-based entertainment.
