Reruns of “Yellowstone” Bring Massive Success for Broadcast TV

Broadcast TV took a hit as streaming became more popular, but with Hollywood’s double strike, reruns of popular shows are rising to the top of the viewing charts.

According to the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report for the week of September 11 – 17, 2023, Yellowstone is the most-watched linear program, sitting at number one as the only scripted show on the list. America’s Got Talent was number 2 this week, after 8 weeks in a row at number 1, with the rest of the top 10 being other game shows and reality competition shows. The Wrap Report sources from viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households drawn from over 25 million connected TVs, balanced to the U.S. Census, and provides a look at the most-watched movies and TV series from the past week across both streaming and linear television.

The rerun of the first episode of Yellowstone did not air on CBS without getting several cuts and edits due to swearing and nudity. Multiple instances of profanity have been removed or replaced with ‘softer’ wording, such as Kelly Reilly’s character telling a man he’s a ‘snowflake,’ instead of cursing him. A few instances of nudity also involving this actress have been digitally altered or reframed. However, an insider at CBS stated that “We are preserving the integrity of the original episodes with minor edits to meet our CBS Broadcast Standards.” Diehard fans and those against censorship may prefer the free rein the series has on streaming and cable. With shows across cable, broadcast, and streaming being delayed, the success of reruns seems assured, but if the original content is altered, will this success continue?

As for streaming, Netflix sits atop the streaming chart with the fifth season of its romantic drama Virgin River, but has also turned to international shows such as a German thriller called Dear Child to stay afloat during the strikes. Netflix may have the top spot, but 2nd and 3rd place was taken by Disney+. Elemental, the Pixar summer theatrical release that was added to streaming this week had 1.5 million households watching during its first five days on the Disney+ platform, with the new Star Wars series Ahsoka claiming the third spot as it nears its conclusion.
