Emigration Drama Io Capitano Will Represent Italy In The 2024 Oscars

“Io Capitano” already won Best Director Silver Lion and the Best New Actor prize, in Venice.

Italy has chosen Matteo Garrone’s powerful emigration drama, “Io Capitano,” as its official submission for the Best International Film category at the 2024 Academy Awards. Io Capitano is a gripping and poignant emigration drama following the harrowing journey of two Senegalese teenagers from Dakar to Italy, battling through the Sahara desert and treacherous Mediterranean waters.

“Io Capitano” premiered at the Venice Film Festival, wowing audiences and critics alike. This captivating film earned director Matteo Garrone the esteemed Best Director Silver Lion award, while 17-year-old Seydou Sarr, a rising talent, took home the Best New Actor prize for his outstanding performance.

The Hollywood Reporter also recognized the film, listing it among the 15 best movies showcased during that year’s fall festivals.

The film’s exploration of migration and its themes struck a powerful chord, making it highly relevant in a world dealing with immigration challenges and policies.

The selection of “Io Capitano” over other strong contenders like Alice Rohrwacher’s “La Chimera,” Nanni Moretti’s “A Brighter Tomorrow,” and Marco Bellocchio’s “Kidnapped” for Italy’s Oscar submission highlights its narrative prowess and compelling storytelling. All these films had their premieres at Cannes, reflecting the rich cinematic landscape from which “Io Capitano” emerged as a standout.

The storyline and themes of migration explored in the film are especially pertinent in a world grappling with immigration challenges and policies. “Io Capitano” shines a light on Italy’s current climate, where immigration is a pressing issue and the government takes a strong stance. This film delves deep into the human side of migration, making it a timely and thought-provoking watch.

Italy’s legacy in the Best International Feature category at the Oscars is impressive, with 11 victories to its name. However, it has been a decade since Italy last triumphed in this category, with Paolo Sorrentino’s “The Great Beauty” in 2013. Matteo Garrone, the director of “Io Capitano,” has had notable successes and recognition, including BAFTA nominations, but has yet to secure an Oscar nomination.

“Io Capitano” was submitted before the critical October 2 deadline, setting the stage for the 2024 Oscars. The anticipation builds as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gets ready to reveal the shortlist of nominees on December 21, 2023. The final five nominees in the Best International Film category will be announced on January 23, 2024, leading up to the grand 95th Academy Awards ceremony at the prestigious Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 10, 2024.
