Americans Spend Over 13 Hours a Day on Digital Media

78% of all U.S. households subscribe to at least one streaming service.

 

According to a survey commissioned by Forbes Home and conducted by market research company Prolific, the average American spent slightly less time on digital media in 2022 compared to the previous year. The survey, which involved 1,005 American consumers, found that the average daily usage was 13 hours and 11 minutes. Out of this, a little more than three hours were spent on traditional video streaming, while the remaining time was allocated to activities such as using smartphones, laptops, and desktop computers for audio and music consumption, live streaming, video gaming, and social media browsing.

Video streaming services are the top choice for subscription-based services, with 78% of U.S. households subscribing to at least one streaming company. This is a significant increase from 2015’s 52%. According to Forbes, Americans find entertainment-related subscriptions most important, including streaming, music, live TV, and gaming.

Netflix leads the chart on subscriptions, followed by Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, Hulu, and YouTube. In the fourth quarter of 2022, Netflix had 231 million subscribers, and Prime Video had more than 200 subscribers.

Spotify and Apple Music are the most recognized names among the music streaming services.

The global streaming market is estimated to reach over $247 billion by 2027.
