“The Little Mermaid” Filmed in Sardinia
The Walt Disney Company’s live-action reimagining directed by Rob Marshall of the iconic and beloved animated musical classic The Little Mermaid (1989) will reach worldwide theaters on May 26th.
Most of the new live-action Little Mermaid was filmed in Sardinia, with production from May to September 2021, originally scheduled for 2020 but postponed due to the pandemic. Several places on the northern coast of Sardinia served as locations including Santa Teresa di Gallura, Golfo Aranci, and Castelsardo.
“It was important to find a location that provided the epic drama of the story,” explains director Rob Marshall. “Sardinia had it all. Crystal-clear sea, dramatic coastline, steep cliffs, castles, wide beaches and country roads.”
Rena Majore became Ariel’s beach where many iconic scenes take place (such as when she comes out of the water to sit on her rock, which was itself crafted and brought to Sardinia). Other locations in Sardinia include Cala Moresca, a dock and a fishing village used for scenes around the castle harbor, and the coastline of Rena di Matteu in the area of Santa Teresa di Gallura with scenes of Ariel and Eric in the carriage.
