SAG-AFTRA & AMPTP Set Date For Contract Talks

Meanwhile, the writers’ strike is getting closer.

While the WGA, whose contract expires May 1, is currently in complicated negotiations with the AMPTP, and a strike is looming (98% of the writers said yes to the walkout in the recent WGA members vote), another important category in Hollywood, actors, will start talks soon with its counterparts.

SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have agreed to begin formal contract negotiations on June 7. In a joint statement, they said they are “approaching this process as an opportunity to engage in thoughtful and interactive conversations that result in a mutually-beneficial deal.”

The actors’ guild’s current contract expires on June 30. In December 2021, not long after Fran Drescher was elected president of SAG-AFTRA, she stated she intended “to build up the perception of SAG-AFTRA as one of power and strength to the envy of our industry peers and reservation of our employers.”

In the SAG magazine, Drescher wrote: “All these efforts taken for the greater good strengthen our positioning when we walk into the negotiating room. We are relevant. We are stars. And we mean business.”

Directors, too, are about to start contract negotiations. The DGA, whose contract expires on June 30, will begin talks on May 10.
