Cinema, Actually: Disney Wins At The Box Office

For the seventh year in a row.

We can argue all day about the cheesy titles and the bleeding-heart projects. However, regarding the box-office performance, there is no race: Disney wins.

In 2022, the Mikey Mouse company was the No. 1 studio at the box office, not just worldwide, with $4.9 billion, but also in the US, with $2 billion, and overseas with $2.9 billion.  Avatar: The Way of Water December release helped, contributing close to $1 billion abroad. It’s the 7th consecutive year that Disney has been No. 1 at the global box office, from 2016 to 2022.

The Burbank-based studio had four of the top eight movies of 2022; Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Thor: Love and Thunder.

Also, Searchlight Pictures released the critically acclaimed The Banshees of Inisherin (98% Rotten Tomatoes Critics Score), which has proven to be a frontrunner during awards season. The Menu also did well. The 89% Rotten Tomatoes Critics Score, still in release, has earned $72M globally. Other titles from Disney included Strange World from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Searchlight Pictures’ Empire of Light and See How They Run, and, from 20th Century Studios, The Bob’s Burgers Movie and Amsterdam.
