SXSW 2026 March 12–18, Austin TX
From March 12 to 18, 2026, Austin, Texas will once again become one of the world’s most strategic meeting points for the creative industries as South by Southwest (SXSW) returns with a program that brings together film, television, music, technology and innovation on an unprecedented scale.
Across seven days, SXSW will host more than 850 conference sessions, 600 mentoring and networking events, 4,400 musicians performing in over 300 live showcases, 460 film and TV screenings, four nights of comedy and 450 brand activations—a concentration of creative activity that few global events can match.
At the center of the week, the SXSW Film & TV Festival and Conference (March 12–18) will welcome filmmakers, producers and storytellers from around the world, reaffirming SXSW’s role as a space where cinematic and episodic storytelling are not only presented, but discussed, challenged and reimagined. The festival remains a key gateway to the international awards circuit: SXSW is an official Academy Awards® qualifying festival for short films, with winners in the Best Animated, Narrative and Documentary Short categories becoming eligible for Oscar consideration. Short films screening at SXSW are also eligible for BAFTA and Independent Spirit Awards, reinforcing the festival’s relevance well beyond its Texas setting.
Running alongside the Film & TV program, the SXSW Innovation Conference (March 12–18) reflects the increasingly porous boundaries between creative expression, technology and business. Designed as a unified conference spanning multiple tracks, it encourages cross-industry dialogue between filmmakers, technologists, entrepreneurs and cultural leaders. A central focus this year is the Tech & AI track, which examines how artificial intelligence and emerging technologies are reshaping creative processes, production models and entire industries—highlighting platforms, software, hardware and visionary leaders driving the next phase of transformation.
SXSW 2026 will also feature a series of high-profile conversations that underscore the festival’s long-standing commitment to storytelling as a cultural and social force. Among the most anticipated is a Featured Session with former First Lady Michelle Obama and her brother Craig Robinson, scheduled for Thursday, March 13 at 1:00 pm CT. As noted by SXSW President and Chief Programming Officer Hugh Forrest, Obama’s belief in the power of shared stories lies at the very heart of the SXSW experience.
Michelle Obama’s impact across publishing, film and audio has been both cultural and commercial: her memoir Becoming spent over 130 weeks on The New York Times Best Sellers list, sold more than 17 million copies worldwide and won a Grammy Award. Through Higher Ground, the media company she co-founded with President Barack Obama, she produced American Factory, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2020. Her work also extends to podcasting—where The Michelle Obama Podcast became Spotify’s most successful original launch—and to global initiatives such as the Girls Opportunity Alliance, supporting girls’ education worldwide. Craig Robinson brings a complementary leadership perspective, drawing on experience across sports, media and executive roles, including his current position as Executive Director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
Another standout session will bring together Eddy Cue, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Services, and Ben Stiller, director and executive producer of Severance, for a conversation on “Moving Culture Through Innovation and Creativity.” Set against the backdrop of Severance becoming the most-watched series in the history of Apple TV+, the discussion will explore how technology, storytelling and audience engagement intersect in today’s global entertainment ecosystem, with exclusive clips and behind-the-scenes insights into one of the defining series of the streaming era.
More than a festival, SXSW continues to function as a living laboratory for the creative industries—where film, television, music and technology converge, and where new models of storytelling, distribution and cultural impact are tested in real time. As the global entertainment landscape continues to evolve, SXSW 2026 confirms its role as a key observatory for understanding what comes next.
