Matteo Garrone’s Io Capitano Nominated for a Golden Globe Amid Fierce Competition

Matteo Garrone’s critically acclaimed Io Capitano and previously honored with the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival is joining the ranks of the top non-English language films in the Golden Globes lineup. It will compete with Anatomy of a Fall, France; Fallen Leaves, Finland; Past Lives, United States; Society of the Snow, Spain; and The Zone of Interest, United Kingdom/USA.

The announcement from Beverly Hills sets the stage for the event scheduled on January 7th and broadcast live on CBS, the Golden Globes still hold prestige despite recent controversies, with many viewing a nomination as a precursor to the Oscars.

This year’s Golden Globes spotlight a fierce rivalry between two major films – Barbie and  Oppenheimer, colloquially dubbed Barbenheimer. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, featuring a cast including Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, leads with nine nominations, surpassing Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, a compelling drama centered on the atomic bomb’s creator.

Barbie stands out in categories such as set design, direction, best lead actress, supporting actor, and three awards for the best original song. For Greta Gerwig, the director of Barbie, this is a notable directorial recognition following previous oversights for her acclaimed work on Lady Bird and Little Women. Oppenheimer’s nominations include best drama, direction, screenplay, lead actor and supporting actor and actress, and best original score. Other notable contenders include Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, each securing seven Golden Globe nominations.

The Best Film category presents a diverse array of twelve nominees, spanning both dramatic and comedic genres. In the dramatic category, films such as Anatomy of a Fall, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, and The Zone of Interest contend for the top spot. The comedic category features Barbie, Air, American Fiction, The Holdovers, May December, and Poor Things.

The Golden Globes also acknowledge box office success, with Taylor Swift’s concert film The Eras making its mark among the contenders alongside Barbie, Oppenheimer, John Wick, Guardians of the Galaxy, Spiderman, Mission: Impossible, and the animated feature Super Mario.

On the television front, Succession leads with eight nominations, followed closely by Ted Lasso and The Crown.

The Golden Globes have faced controversies, notably in January 2020 when a Los Angeles Times exposé accused the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) of corruption and racism. This led to a boycott by NBC and numerous Hollywood VIPs. Subsequently, the HFPA dissolved, and the Golden Globes brand found a new home with Dick Clark Productions and a new broadcast with CBS. The awards are now determined by a diverse panel of 300 jurors from 75 countries.
